It depends when it is introduced.
To facilitate self-learning and the concept of meeting deadlines, homework is definitely beneficial.
If homework didn't exist, a lot of students would fall behind because of the lack of motivation/insistence to do continued learning outside of school. It will be down to the parents approach.
