What do retired ESL teachers do to keep active?

Post by Denis »

We complain about our busy schedules, extra classes, office work, PTA meetings, testing, grading, writing reports, etc. until the day we retire then find out we kind of miss those busy days. That's me right now. I have been thinking about what retired ESL teachers do. I am doing some consulting. Education consulting is not that popular in China where I am residing.
I'd like to know what other veteran ESL teachers here think.

Thanks
Denis.

I know a few who do small tutoring gigs or part time work over the week just to keep them ticking along. A half day teacher or even being a contractual substitute that covers leaves can keep you active.

In terms of consulting, it seems like the industry in China/Hong Kong is trying to cut all costs. Even recruitment finds it difficult to find clientele for their spots. I do believe that we are entering the phase of lowering overall costs due to the impact and competition of the internet.

Sometimes I coach candidates preparing for IELTS and TOEFL online.
I would love to attend some ESL seminars / webinars where my teaching experience can be put to use.

I used to get invited to quite a few online seminars on Linkedin.

Not as common nowadays but I am sure if you join or network with the correct group, you can contribute your experience.

In fact I have been thinking about organizing a series of webinars on zoom. Two hours of experience sharing by ESL teachers who want to share ideas. Each webinar can be focused on popular TEFL topics like Classroom Management, Lesson Planning, etc.
Would ESL teachers be interested?

There'd definitely be a lot interest, it is getting that reach. Social media is based on word of mouth and you need an established network to get the message out there quickly.

Alternatively, you can develop your own series of webinars and upload them on course providing websites to generate interest. Once you have an established number of users or contacts, then you can do live seminars via zoom.

Thanks for the tips. I will do some more thinking. I don't want a webinar with just former colleagues teasing me around. I would love to have a webinar that draws ESL teachers based in many more countries around the globe.
