Titles capitalization

Post by toedrika »

I know titled must be in capital letters but here ("president") it is not. Why?

"Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan urged Palestinians to unite amid Israel’s war in Gaza following hours-long talks with Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Istanbul on Saturday, his office said." This is from The Guardian online.

In your example, "president" is not used as Erdogan's title but merely as a description.

Perhaps these examples will demonstrate the difference for you:

He said that Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan urged Palestinians to... :ok:

He said that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey urged Palestinians to... :ok:

He said that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, (the) president of Turkey, urged Palestinians to... :ok:
