[time yourself in] or [time yourself when]

I have made up the sentences below.

(1) During your practice, you should time yourself in running five kilometres.

(2) During your practice, you should time yourself when running five kilometres.

I am not sure which one is correct: in or when. Thank you for your help.

(2) is correct.
