Hello, I’m trying to get the meaning of a hotly debated Bible verse. Jesus states: “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.”From the Greek, Peter is petros (small rock) and on this rock (Petra bedrock or large boulder). Who is Petra? One side says it’s Peter and another side says it’s Jesus. Every study and exegesis states one side or the other and no in between. All arguments are based on the Greek grammar but I’m seeing something in the English translation that no one else is seeing. “This” may actually refer to a piece of bedrock (petra) they may be standing on so the verse would read “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this bedrock we are standing on I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I can’t figure out the grammar of what “this” is pointing to. Any help is greatly appreciated!
