Zimbabwe President Resigns After 37 Years

The 93-year-old president of Zimbabwe resigned this week while facing impeachment an army takeover. Robert Mugabe’s presidency began almost four decades ago in 1980 when Zimbabwe first gained from . On November 6 of this year, Mugabe fired his vice-president, a long-term ally. Many in his own party believe he did this to prepare his 52-year-old wife Grace as his successor. In the two weeks, Mugabe’s allies and party turned against him for this decision and put him under house arrest. Zimbabweans celebrated in the streets after hearing of the resignation. Former vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to take over the presidency.
