Australian Banknote Features Typo

Pre-Listening Vocabulary

  • banknote: paper money, bill
  • amusing: causing one to laugh
  • micro-text: very small text that cannot be seen with the naked eye
  • accessibility: having a design that helps people with disabilities
  • acknowledge: to admit or state that something is true

Australian Banknote Features Typo

46 million $50 Australian banknotes have been printed with an amusing typo. The word “responsibility” is its third “i”. The misspelled word was spotted in the micro-text of Edith Cowan’s . Cowan was Australia’s first member of parliament. The new banknote, which has special and accessibility features, was rolled out last October. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has acknowledged the and says it will be corrected in the next print run.

Comprehension Questions

  1. What is the report mainly about?
  2. What part of the banknote contained the error?
  3. How did the RBA respond?

Discussion Questions

Though RBA admitted that they were “aware” of the typo, spelling mistakes are sometimes used intentionally in micro-text as a security feature. Do you think this typo was placed there intentionally as an anti-counterfeiting feature? Will this banknote become a collector’s item worth more than $50? Why or why not?
