The Guardian Adopts Stronger Language for Environmental Issues

The Guardian, a prominent daily newspaper, is encouraging its reporters to use stronger language to describe issues. The Guardian’s in-house style guide now using “climate crisis” or “climate emergency” over “climate change”. It also recommends using “global heating” instead of “global warming”. Katharine Viner, the editor-in-chief, stressed that the newspaper is committed to using language that is “scientifically precise”. In a related report about the US this week, the Guardian noted that “Democrats rated global as the third most important issue on their list, while Republican voters ranked it last.”

Comprehension Questions

  1. What in-house change did the Guardian make?
  2. According to the editor of the newspaper, why is this an important change?
  3. Why does the report mention US Republican voters?

Discussion Questions

Do you think a language shift from “climate change” to “climate crisis” is a good idea? Will you adopt it? Why or why not?
