Nintendo Confirms More Movie Projects After Super Mario Success
After the massive global success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo has officially greenlit not only a sequel but also a live-action Legend of Zelda film. According to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, this is just the beginning of a bigger push into film and television content.
Visual Content Becomes a Strategic Priority
During a recent Q&A session, Furukawa shared that Nintendo is now taking a proactive role in developing film and TV adaptations of its most iconic intellectual properties. Unlike in the past, when the company licensed its IPs with limited involvement, Nintendo is now investing directly in production. This allows for greater control over creative decisions and ensures the quality meets their brand standards.
What’s Already in the Pipeline?
So far, we know about two projects: a sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie and a live-action Legend of Zelda film. The Zelda movie is being co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, and is expected to be a large-scale production aimed at both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise.
Which Nintendo Franchises Could Be Next?
Furukawa didn’t give away many specifics, but he hinted at more Nintendo movie adaptations down the line. Franchises that are strong candidates include:
- Kirby – already beloved for its charm and family-friendly appeal
- Star Fox – perfect for a sci-fi animated adventure
- Animal Crossing – a natural fit for a cozy, slice-of-life series
- Splatoon – full of vibrant action and youth appeal
- Donkey Kong – already teased in the Mario movie
Building the Future of Nintendo’s Brand
Nintendo’s goal is clear: to expand its fanbase beyond video games by introducing its characters through films and shows. Furukawa explained that these new ventures are meant to “expand the number of people who have access to Nintendo IP” and support their core gaming business in return.
With Nintendo now hands-on in production, fans can expect a higher level of authenticity and storytelling in upcoming releases. If the success of the Mario movie is any indication, these adaptations could mark a new golden age for Nintendo on screen.
